5th January – We meet Archimedes (at his own museum)

Today's New Social Network Connections

Cloudy and damp sunday....quiet day, not a lot open.... had to dig up someone born over 2,300 years ago for today's
new connection. The greek mathematician's discoveries underpin most of today's technological developments. Its good to be able to visit a science museum in Europe. We don't celebrate our scientists enough when compared to the artists. Of course the most famous person to bridge the science/art divide is an Italian, Vincent Van Gogh

We also meet our Airbnb hosts Linda and Bruno in Syracuse. Its novel to have a native English speaking host in Italy (Linda, not Bruno)

January 3rd - Nellie sweeps up the ash and we meet more Aussies with Italian connections

Today's New Network Connections

We meet two more Aussies at dinner. We see they are eating pizza that looks just like the ones we had at the World's best Pizza restaurant in Naples a few years ago. Very simple and plain looking...not like our Dominos! Peter is a graphic designer in Sydney and his wife Pieria is Sicilian and teaches Italian in Sydney. Like us the restaurant was recommended to them...though it looks like they have been coming here for years.

Social Network Trip Log Mapping

As Social Network Analysts we often find ourselves swimming against the tides of convention. In the business world we favour people, relationships and connections over the organisational hierarchies, processes and workflows that dominate the business literature.

We are currently travelling on holiday so I’ve decided to run a little experiment. We are meeting up with family for a white Xmas in Northern Italy, then travelling to different parts of Italy independently. We then move on to Israel and Jordan and meet with other friends joining us from Australia. Trip time approximately 6 weeks.

The tradition for travel writing is to write about interesting places, at times enhanced by anecdotes on people met thrown in to add some colour. I’ve decided to turn this around and report on interesting people we meet and connect with, enhanced by the places we meet for some added colour.

I am publishing social network maps on days we meet new and interesting people here: Link to Main Trip Blog. But for those just interested in how the map evolves, rather than my long winded ramblings I'm just publishing the maps here. I will also keep a cumulative map as our travel evolves. For clarity in the maps I’m only reporting initiating connections between people as we are often all connected in some way. Connections to places are complete though.
